How-to guide

How to optimize an Amazon book listing to maximize conversions.

A step-by-step guide to the five areas that decide whether traffic converts: descriptions, A+ content, reviews, categories, and the fine tuning most listings never get to.

Shimmr drives high-quality traffic to your Amazon book listings. To turn that traffic into sales, the listing itself has to be doing its job. This guide covers every area that matters – descriptions, A+ content, reviews, categories, and the fine tuning that most listings never get round to.

1. Write a book description that actually sells

Your description is the sales pitch. It is the moment a customer is about to hand over money, so justifying the cost is paramount. Optimize each element.

Open with a hook

Start with a premise, a rhetorical question, a compelling quote from the book, or another attention-grabbing hook. This opening line or two makes or breaks interest in the crucial first seconds after someone lands on the page. Fail here and nothing else gets read.

Use emotional triggers

Don’t describe plot, characters or contents in a dry, matter-of-fact way. Use vivid sensory description and tap into universal emotional drivers to create a connection. Speak directly to your target reader’s interests, passions, desires, fears and intellectual curiosities.

Lead with benefits, not features

Convey clearly what the reader gets. What problems will the book help them solve? How will their life be different after reading it? Whether functional or emotional, selling the beneficial outcome is what compels a buyer.

Include persuasive calls to action

Actively sell. Intersperse lines like “Don’t miss out on this suspenseful thrill ride” or “Buy now and uncover the shocking secrets.” Calls to action create urgency and compel a decision.

Design for scannability

Format with short paragraphs, white space, bulleted lists, bold sub-headers and succinct sentences. Bullet points in particular are favored by Amazon’s systems, which prioritize pages with that structure. It also lets readers digest key details in bite-sized sections.

Front-load your keywords

The first 75–100 words act as critical metadata influencing search rankings. Incorporate relevant keywords and search terms naturally, and include semantic variations. The same applies to A+ content.

Don’t over-format

Bullets, bold and italics guide the reader, but excessive variation in fonts, colors and text sizes gets penalized. Amazon downranks over-formatted descriptions.

Shimmr builds all of the above into the product descriptions it generates. Our system reads the book, extracts these elements, and produces a description tailored to sell it. You are welcome to use it on your Amazon page.

2. Unlock the 5%+ conversion boost from A+ content

High-quality A+ content with rich multimedia and the right keywords increases conversions by over 5%, according to Amazon. Getting it right means four things.

Engaging images

Text-only listings are limited in their ability to grab attention. Add eye-catching imagery that brings the book to life – graphic or illustrative designs work well. Reuse existing material where you can; this can otherwise become a large task that isn’t worth the hours or the cash.

A mobile-first layout

Over 50% of Amazon’s traffic now comes from mobile. Your A+ content and overall listing must be formatted for a seamless experience on small screens.

Searchable text, not text inside images

Amazon’s systems scan and analyze actual text content to evaluate listings and determine relevance for customer searches. Text embedded in an image is invisible to them. Keep your copy in a standard text format and incorporate target keywords naturally throughout the visible text areas.

Merchandise the full series

For authors with multiple books in a series, A+ content modules let you showcase all related titles in one listing. This increases visibility of the full series and drives future sales after readers finish the first book.

Creating custom A+ content for every listing is enormously time-consuming. Shimmr automates it – you are welcome to use the text and imagery it provides. The images are built to grab attention; the text is rich in keywords.

3. Master the power of reviews

Customer reviews provide the social proof that makes or breaks sales. Prioritize both quantity and quality.

Quantity drives confidence

More reviews overcome scepticism and increase buyer confidence. Request reviews consistently through automated follow-up email sequences after purchase. Consider incentivizing with entry into giveaways or product bundles.

Quality builds credibility

A few insightful, well-written reviews carry far more weight than dozens of vague ones. When requesting reviews, give specific prompts that encourage detailed feedback on the book’s strengths, core themes and overall experience.

Momentum matters

A steady stream of new reviews signals active engagement. Aim to maintain a total of 25–50+ to create strong social proof, and always respond promptly and professionally to negative reviews.

Where to drive reviews from

  • Kindle – making your eBook free for a few days a month, as KDP allows, will drive more reviews.
  • Your email list – ask for honest reviews, and set up automated emails so everyone who joins gets asked.
  • Social following – ask, and don’t be shy about repeating the ask weekly for a few weeks. Algorithms and limited attention mean most people won’t see every post.
  • Influencers – identify them through #BookTok and #Bookstagram, and personalize each application to maximize your chance of acceptance.
  • LibraryThing – a hotbed of active readers leaving reviews and adding books to recommendation lists. Apply to their Early Reviewers programme, which gives free copies in exchange for honest reviews.
  • More traffic – more traffic drives more purchases, which drives more reviews. Put a clear call to action at the end of the book reminding readers to leave one.

4. Get your categories right

Where your book sits has a major impact on visibility. You only get to select three categories, so the choice is critical.

Align category, keywords and content

Amazon checks that your keywords and actual content align with the categories you select. A significant disconnect can get your listing penalized or suppressed. Choose categories that are a true fit.

Study competitor selections

Look at the categories chosen by books similar to yours. Work through the top ten competing titles and keep a running list of candidates. Then check the top ten books in each of those categories to see whether any resemble yours.

Find your niche

Use a spread of parent categories and the drill-down categories beneath them. You are more likely to rank highly in the smaller ones, and the spread gets you the most relevant traffic.

Prefer less competitive categories

Hyper-popular categories are often oversaturated. Identify where competition is less intense and you have a better chance of breaking through – don’t ignore adjacent or niche categories that match your target reader.

Use duplicate categories to your advantage

54% of Amazon categories are duplicates. Amazon won’t let you select multiple duplicates – it greys them out – but performing well in one automatically lists you well in its duplicates. For example:

  • Books › Mystery, Thriller & Suspense › Mystery › Historical
  • Books › Literature & Fiction › Historical Fiction › Mysteries
  • Books › Literature & Fiction › Genre Fiction › Historical › Mysteries

Note that Amazon ultimately chooses your categories – it’s in their terms of service. They don’t guarantee the three you pick and can change them to ensure a positive customer experience, based on your keywords, description and content.

5. Additional fine tuning

Keep the headline clean

Your listing title should be the name of the book, and the author if relevant. Avoid claims like “bestseller” or “new release” – Amazon punishes listings that try to game its search function this way.

Place quoted reviews selectively

Never include more than five review excerpts; more creates clutter. Place no more than two at the end of the product description and no more than three in your A+ content. In neither case should a quote come first.

Focus on traffic quality

Optimizing the listing is only half the equation. The more high-quality, well-targeted traffic your listing receives, the higher Amazon prioritizes it in search and recommendation algorithms. Precisely targeted traffic is exactly what Shimmr delivers.

Watch Net Pure Profit Margin

Amazon prioritizes visibility for books with a high Net Pure Profit Margin for Amazon’s bottom line – not the seller’s. Be aware this influences how books are ranked in their algorithm.

The short version

Optimize every aspect of your listing and you turn high-quality traffic into compounding sales momentum. Consistent monitoring of the key metrics is what lets you iterate and refine.

Optimized listings need traffic worth converting.
